What is maximalism?

What is maximalism?

The Maximalist Comeback Is Here to Stay!

After years of stripped down, neutral minimalism dominating interior design, the pendulum is shifting towards an unapologetic “more is more” maximalist style.

According to a recent survey from Houzz, 32% of homeowners say they plan to incorporate more colour, pattern and texture into home renovations this year - signs that maximalism is on the rise. The survey also found that bold, saturated colours like jewel tones and bright hues have risen 24% in popularity versus last year.

So what exactly is maximalism? It’s all about self-expression through decorating with lush layers of colours, prints, textures and accessories. Think rich velvets, animal prints, gallery walls filled with artwork, and lacquered furniture. It’s cozy yet bold and vibrant - the complete opposite of stark minimalism.

“After years of using restraint in design choices, people are ready to unleash their inner personality at home,” says leading interior designer Sarah Greenfield. Her recent projects feature funky wallpaper, brightly coloured cabinets, and unique vintage furniture to create the signature maximalist style.

There are several ways to jump into maximalist decor:

Mix Patterns - Do not be afraid to combine multiple graphic prints like chevron, animal print, florals and even plaids in one space. Add texture with faux fur pillows and wool rugs layered on top.

Choose Saturated Colours - Deep emerald green, sapphire blue and eggplant purple bring drama and sophistication. Paint built-in shelving or cabinets in a rich hue to anchor the space.

Accessorize to the Max - The accessories really make the look in maximalism. Sculptural vases, velvet toss pillows, large-scale artwork and objets d’art take surfaces from simple to spectacular.

If you feel like your home has the boredom blues, embrace the “go bold or go home” maximalist mantra this season for instant drama and flair. Layer up the colours, pile on the pillows, and display your collections proudly.   Minimalism is so yesterday!
